DoD Facilities Experts Can Now Access New Resources and Training on the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG.org)

With support from the DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office, the WBDG Whole Building Design Guide®, found at www.wbdg.org, has published new informational resources, guidance, and an environmental severity classification tool to help facilities experts stay current on best practices in corrosion prevention and mitigation.

The WBDG CPC (Corrosion Prevention and Control) Source material has been customized for facilities planners, designers, builders, and maintainers, while supplementing the portal’s other corrosion-related knowledge, codes, guidelines, criteria, best practices, and training material.

The newly published CPC Source material at WBDG.org includes:

In early fall, 2018, the CPC Source will feature a new knowledge page focused on utilities and buried structures and an up-to-date review of all extant policies and guidance for DoD facilities and infrastructure.

“Knowledge pages are designed to provide just-in-time concise information on high-risk facilities areas for the designer, engineer, and sustainer who may need insights into DoD projects and sustainment,” said J. Clay Dean, P.E., a DoD Corrosion Office analyst and WBDG resource co-author.

New Course Modules with Voice-Over Narration

Throughout 2018-19, the WBDG CPC Source will be enhanced by eight new training modules, which are introduced in detail at http://www.wbdg.org/ffc/dod/cpc-source/training#tv. Thus far, the DoD Corrosion Office has published courses on Cathodic Protection Basics and Corrosion Prevention and Control of Utilities and Buried Structures.

Anyone who completes these courses will qualify for one (1) Professional Development Hour (PDH)--the accepted professional accreditation for engineers and architects. Before accessing the new WBDG courses, users will be prompted to set up an account on the WBDG portal.

New Corrosivity Estimation Tool

The WBDG also recently published a new corrosion toolbox that contains several tools for evaluating environmental severity and compiling environmental data. These tools comprise the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Corrosivity Category Estimation Tool (ICCET). The ICCET Tool was developed as part of the DoD Corrosion Office Environmental Severity and Corrosivity study. The ICCET Tool can be used to estimate the local ISO Corrosivity Condition, as well as the Wood Decay Hazard Index; overlay various corrosion data and severity indices using interactive maps; view animated maps of monthly corrosivity; and obtain air pollution and weather data from NOAA and EPA databases.
