Cyber Security Expert Paul A. Henry to Discuss Evolving Threats at Seattle Cyber Security Training Event

BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- SANS Institute, the global leader in cyber security training, today announced the agenda for SANS Seattle Fall 2018 (#SANSSeattle) taking place October 15-20 in Washington. Courses will help security professionals at every level develop new skills to better protect their organization. A special keynote talk, Evolving Threats, will be given by renowned cyber security expert Paul A. Henry (@phenrycissp).

"Bad guys are constantly evolving to try to stay one step ahead of our defenses. They observe how we react and then make adjustments to their methods to better avoid detection. As defenders we tend to remain static using the same defenses that we have used for the past 20 years such as firewalls, antivirus etc. which leaves us at a disadvantage," says Henry. "To afford the necessary protections our defenses must evolve to match today's evolving threats. A great example of an evolving threat is the shift from crypto locker-like malware where files are encrypted and held for ransom with payment made in bitcoins - to malware that actually mines bitcoins, consuming your CPU cycles and RAM in producing new bitcoins that are transferred automatically to cyber criminals. If you are operating in the cloud you are paying for the CPU cycles you consume, hence bitcoin mining malware can dramatically increase your operating expenses."

In addition to his keynote discussion, Henry will teach the ICS 410: ICS/SCADA Security Essentials course. This course provides a foundational set of standardized skills and knowledge for industrial cyber security professionals. It is designed to ensure that the workforce involved in supporting and defending industrial control systems is trained to keep the operational environment safe, secure, and resilient against current and emerging cyber threats.
