Airman Honored by The American Legion for Community Service

An Air Force Staff Sergeant stationed with the 436th Force Support Squadron, FSDA, at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware employed as an Airman Leadership School (ALS) Instructor received The American Legion’s Spirit of Service Award today in recognition of his extensive volunteer efforts.

American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan, the first female to hold the position of National Commander in the Legion’s 100 year history, presented the award to SSgt. Robert P. Andrews along with Walter Joseph Marm, Jr., Medal of Honor recipient, and retired Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. Michael Barrett during The American Legion’s 100th National Convention in Minneapolis. Andrews was honored along with representatives from the four other armed services and the National Guard at the annual business gathering of the 2-million-member Legion, the nation's largest veterans organization.

Working as an ALS Instructor with the 436th Force Support Squadron in Delaware, Andrews devoted countless hours in the community volunteering for numerous charitable and community organizations and activities.

Sergeant Andrews organized 492 volunteers, raising over $165,000 dollars for Dover Air Force Base private organizations, four non-profit organizations and the Delaware local community. Furthermore, he was hand-selected by leadership to manage three local events, supporting over 5,000 Airmen and families. His efforts culminated with him garnering the 2017 President’s Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, a first for Dover Air Force Base.

"Our nation is fortunate to have such dedicated servicemembers as Staff Sergeant Robert P. Andrews," Rohan said. "For both his service to America and his community, ALS Instructor Andrews is a credit to his uniform and to our country.”

This is the 19th year that The American Legion has sponsored the Spirit of Service.
