Turnbridge expands care to treat eating disorders

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Turnbridge, one of the nation's leading addiction treatment programs, announces the expansion of its services to treat eating disorders.

For more than 15 years, people from around the country have come to New Haven to receive some of the most effective treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. Turnbridge has earned a reputation as a highly effective program that helps individuals and families achieve lasting recovery, independence, and improved well-being. Today, the program expands its clinical services to offer eating disorder treatment to residents of New Haven and surrounding communities through its outpatient center on Orange Street. Joy Zelikovsky, PSY.D., HSPP, M.A., M.PHIL.ED., M.S.ED, an experienced clinician who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, will head the new Turnbridge eating disorder program.

"Eating disorder treatment is a natural and necessary extension of Turnbridge mental health services," says Zelikovsky. "Eating disorders have the highest fatality rate of any mental health condition. They are highly stigmatized, not well-understood by most people, difficult to detect by untrained professionals and affect men and women of all ages -- even children. We provide the coordinated physical and mental health care needed to treat eating disorders effectively."

Turnbridge clinicians have extensive experience helping people address negative self-image, unaddressed trauma, depression and anxiety disorders, and other mental health challenges that can contribute to the development and perpetuation of eating disorders. The program provides the thorough medical testing and coordinated psychiatry, psychotherapy, and nutritional education needed to treat eating disorders effectively.

New Haven Chief of Police Anthony Campbell, State Representative Robyn Porter, and Dr. Frosty O'Keefe and Jennifer Gleason Abbatemarco, from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, gathered for the ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of the new program.

Turnbridge, an innovator in the addiction treatment and mental healthcare field developed a graduated three-phased treatment program that helps clients gain skills and independence at their own pace. They were among the first programs in the country to eliminate arbitrary lengths of stay and to measure progress and program completion one client at a time. The program credits New Haven's vibrant recovery community and its many educational and business institutions for providing its clients with support and opportunities vital to maintaining long-term recovery.

Making comprehensive eating disorder treatment accessible to people in New Haven and surrounding communities is one way for the program to give back to its hometown. "This community is so rich in academic, vocational, and volunteer opportunities for our clients. The New Haven recovery community is one of the most active and open in the country. We're proud to be a member of this community. While many of our clients come to Turnbridge from around the country, we're always looking for new ways to make our services available to our neighbors right here at home," says Turnbridge Clinical Director Jonathan Lowe.
