CAT® FOOTWEAR invites Greater Chicago Community to "BUILD FOR BETTER"

CHICAGO, Oct. 05, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On Saturday, October 6th, CAT® FOOTWEAR will celebrate their sponsorship of the Instagram Builder's Challenge by inviting the Greater Chicago Area to come out and support their community through a series of activities as part of Cat Footwear's "BUILD FOR BETTER" initiative.

The IG Builder's Challenge (IGBC), which also kicks off its 6th Season that day, welcomes builders around the country to build a desk and submit their creations through Instagram throughout the month of October. The IGBC started out as a friendly competition amongst fellow woodworkers and has snowballed into a national contest with a growing digital footprint. To champion that innovative spirit and all of the DIYers involved, Cat Footwear is helping the IGBC to amplify the challenge and give back at the same time.

With this theme in mind, Cat Footwear has partnered with Designs for Dignity, a nonprofit organization that transforms charity environments through pro bono design services and in-kind furniture donations, to makeover the office of a local charity in need.

The event will take place at the Rebuilding Exchange in Chicago--a nonprofit that is celebrating its 10th Anniversary of diverting building materials from landfills by repurposing and selling used goods. Participants at the event can sign-up for one of three workshop sessions throughout the day, which will be led by the three co-founders of the IGBC, where they will help to build a series of desks for the nonprofit. Together, the group will work with reclaimed wood to chop, mill, sand, finish and ultimately assemble the new desks.

Beyond the building sessions, this family-friendly event will offer a range of complimentary festivities which include: "Drop-in Workshops" where you can learn to build office accessories like pencil holders (also to be donated to the charity), the charity: water "Water Walk" where you can support the global community by walking for clean drinking water in developing nations (each person who completes the walk unlocks clean and safe drinking water for one person), a "live-carving" installation by YouTuber Chop With Chris, food trucks on location, and Cat Footwear games & giveaways.

"We believe in building a better future in our community and this 'BUILD FOR BETTER' event will be the first of many opportunities for our consumers to join us in doing just that," says Janice Tennant, Chief Marketing Officer for Cat Footwear.

The event will take place on October 6th from 10am - 4pm at the Rebuilding Exchange (1740 W Webster Avenue, Chicago, IL 60614). To register for building sessions or the general RSVP, visit: https://events.blackbirdrsvp.com/buildforbetter.

About Rebuilding Exchange:
Rebuilding Exchange is a nonprofit social enterprise established by Delta Institute in January 2009 and became fully independent in 2015. At Rebuilding Exchange we repurpose building materials that would otherwise devalue a community and provide skills training for people in poverty, making a commitment to education and economic development in Chicago's underserved communities. We do this by diverting materials from landfills and making them accessible for reuse through our retail warehouse, by promoting sustainable deconstruction practices, by providing education and job training programs, and by creating innovative models for sustainable reuse. Rebuilding Exchange has three distinct social enterprise areas which achieve our mission of diverting materials from the landfill and providing affordable access and education to the community. The proceeds from these programs support our job training program, which provides individuals with barriers to employment critical training spanning a six-month apprenticeship that includes marketable skills and certifications. In working with our team and immersing them in our mission and culture, we empower our apprentices to see the inarguable parallels between the repurposing of things and the repurposing of self. https://rebuildingexchange.org/
