Learn How Landfill Gases Are Converted to Energy at Prince William County Landfill

Fortistar, the owner and operator of the Prince William Energy landfill gas (LFG) plant in Manassas, Virginia, today announced that they will be sponsoring Prince William Recycles Day 2018. Fortistar will be hosting free tours of the landfill facility during the event on Saturday October 13 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is collected from the Prince William County landfill and then is converted into clean renewable energy.

Fortistar welcomes the public and the media to see firsthand how this is done and to learn about the benefits of LFG at Prince William County Recycles Day at the Prince William County landfill. Fortistar financed, built and operates the landfill gas plant, which collects the methane from the landfill to convert into energy, which is then purchased by Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) and is used to power thousands of local homes.

“Landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States. Capturing the methane from the landfill trash and converting it into renewable energy is a winning solution for the community and our environment,” said Mark Comora, President of Fortistar. “Prince William County has been a great partner over the years and we are proud to sponsor their Recycles Day event again this year.”

This year’s Prince William Recycles Day will feature educational entertainment such as The 3R's of Recycling Magic Show by Nate Unsworth, which will feature at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., as well as recycling and waste reduction games, activities, prizes, face-painting, food, and free tours of the landfill.

“We are thrilled to host another year of Prince William Recycles Day,” said Deborah Campbell, of the Prince William County Solid Waste Division. “Our sponsors help to make it possible to put on this wonderful event, and help to educate young people and other county residents about the importance of recycling in a fun and interactive way.”
