thyssenkrupp delivers largest ever airport solutions contract at new Istanbul Grand Airport

Global mobility solutions provider thyssenkrupp Elevator is today celebrating the unveiling of one of its biggest ever projects in the Middle East: a total mobility solutions package of 143 passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) and four elevators in the new Istanbul Grand Airport, in Turkey.

The new €22.15 billion + VAT airport is Turkey’s largest infrastructure investment to-date. When all four phases are complete it will become the world’s largest airport, boasting six runways and an annual capacity of 200 million people. Phase one is being officially opened today, featuring two runways and a terminal ready to accommodate 90 million people. Critical to the airport’s operational capacity, thyssenkrupp Elevator’s PBBs and elevators will offer a fully integrated solution to help ensure a seamless and efficient flow of people from airport entry to boarding the aeroplane.

Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO at thyssenkrupp Elevator, comments: “The Istanbul Grand Airport is a significant project for us, creating an urgently-needed facility for Istanbul and an advanced new travelling experience for millions of global passengers. The brief required premium quality equipment, efficient delivery and a sophisticated aesthetic. Through the fantastic work of our multidiscipline team and our vast expertise in airport solutions, we are pleased to have developed a best-in-class package that could meet these needs and create a stable mobility system to keep the airport running smoothly.”

thyssenkrupp’s PBBs have been designed and manufactured following the highest standards for state-of-the-art technology, and are equipped with well-proven, robust components. The PBBs were manufactured at the company’s factory in Mieres, Spain, and then transferred to Istanbul where installation work began in 2017.

The Istanbul Grand Airport project posed a number of challenges, including a vast 50 km2 construction site across which 33,000 workers were operating. thyssenkrupp’s expert team of 50 staff worked hard to ensure a safe environment for employees and subcontractors, and set systems in place to provide optimum efficiency and meet the tight project delivery timeframes. thyssenkrupp’s work was completed in just 27 months, from contract signature to completion.

thyssenkrupp Elevator has built a strong portfolio in mobility solutions in the Middle East, including advanced technology installed at airports in Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Jeddah. The company will have a continued presence at Istanbul Grand Airport, owning the maintenance contract for the PBBs.
