Fortistar Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Miramar Landfill Gas Utilization Projects

Fortistar LLC, a sustainability-focused private company helping to facilitate the transition to a carbon-free economy, will celebrate a successful and productive 20 year public–private partnership in providing clean, sustainable and reliable power from its Miramar landfill gas projects at a landfill event on November 4th, kicking off the U.S. Biogas 2018 conference in San Diego.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane gas emissions in the United States. These methane gas emissions from landfills represent an opportunity to capture and to generate a significant energy resource.

Fortistar’s Miramar landfill gas projects provide approximately 2,669,760,000 scf of captured methane gas for local electricity generation each year. The electricity generated from the gas is equivalent to powering 113,304 homes each year. The facility has prevented thousands of metric tons of methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas, from being released into the atmosphere each year.

“Communities across the U.S. increasingly are looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet their sustainability goals. Landfill gas-to-energy projects are one of the most cost-effective ways by which to achieve this,” Mark Comora, President of Fortistar. “For decades, our Miramar landfill gas projects have provided San Diego and the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station with clean, renewable and reliable power—a win-win-win for the community, environment and national security—and they will certainly help the city meet its 100% renewable energy goal. Every landfill in the country should be looking at how it can best use its landfill gas.”

Fortistar’s 20th anniversary celebration event at the Miramar landfill will kick off the U.S. Biogas 2018 conference at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley from November 5-6, 2018. The conference will bring together over 200 biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) experts to discuss the growth of U.S biogas to RNG markets. RNG is carbon-neutral and is chemically identical to geological natural gas, allowing it to be to be used as a transportation fuel in natural gas vehicles and trucks.

David Unger, Fortistar’s Senior Vice President responsible for developing RNG projects across the United States, will be a featured speaker at the U.S. Biogas Conference.

For more than 30 years as a privately-owned firm, Fortistar has built, invested in and managed an unparalleled portfolio of successful LFG projects and other transitional clean energy generation projects in the U.S. and Canada. Fortistar’s ability to forge strong relationships with partners and local communities has been a hallmark of the company’s formula for success.
