Arden Media Company on How to Buy and Sell a Smart City

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The problem with smart cities is no one wants to buy them. Because no one knows how to sell them. The technology is proven, but the commercial models are only just emerging. A new report, published this week by Enterprise IoT Insights, an Arden Media Company, publication, examines how city authorities and technology companies are coming together to fund smart city solutions.

The report, entitled How to buy and sell a smart city - procurement models to make every city smart, considers both existing and future business models for smart cities.

Limiting global warming will require "rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented" changes in all aspects of society, according to the United Nations. Cities are at the crucible for this change. More than half the global population lives in cities; at least two thirds are expected to do so by 2050. To a greater extent, the world's problems must be solved in the world's cities.

Digital technologies, reaching early maturity, can help. Technology presents cities with a chance to refine and redesign their operations. In the case of smart cities, the drugs do work, we are told; it is just the patient is reacting in new ways, and businesses cannot agree on a value and a cost for these new prescriptions.

This new report from Enterprise IoT Insights seeks to address the ultimate challenge for smart cities, big and small, to deliver on the promise of technology: how to buy it in the first place. It tackles the same question for the vendor community, destined to shoulder the capital burden at the outset: how to sell it.

James Blackman, editor of Enterprise IoT Insights, commented: "Smart cities are stuck in a procedural tangle as the market hammers out the terms for a new value exchange, which organises and calculates the softer returns the technology delivers. This negotiation is happening between the gaps in commercial PPP arrangements. The work is urgent. Until the trade is resolved, progress will be dictated by state handouts and energy savings."

The report is available here. A webinar to attend its release, featuring the City of Cardiff, as well as analyst house Navigant Research, and leading smart city vendors AT&T, Cisco, Cradlepoint, is available here.
