According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Maryland is among the top five states in the nation in the rate of opioid related overdose deaths, and in 2017, the state launched a new web portal called "Before It's Too Late," a collection of resources to address the escalating incidence of misuse and abuse of illicit substances and prescription opioids. Earlier this year, Governor Larry Hogan signed new legislation to enhance information sharing and response to overdose events, and to expand the state's volume dealer statute to include fentanyl and its analogs. The curriculum to be presented at PAINWeekEnd Baltimore will equip participants with knowledge and skills to better negotiate the changing regulatory landscape for prescribers while meeting the needs of their patients with pain. Senior PAINWeek faculty member Michael Clark, MD, MPH, MBA, will consider the causes of, and contributors to, acute-to-chronic pain transition, in his course When Acute Pain Becomes Chronic. "Many factors have been proposed to increase the likelihood of acute pain becoming chronic including, but not limited to, undertreatment," Dr. Clark observed. "This session will describe this phenomenon and some theories behind its development, along with case based situations which outline strategies that can help to decrease the likelihood that patients with acute pain will develop chronic pain and experience its associated consequences." Dr. Clark will also be presenting Chronic Pain Assessment.
