Penetron Technology Helps Keep Pedestrian Tunnel Dry in Vitebsk

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Dec. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The first construction project at the intersection of the Moskovskiy Prospekt / P21 Highway in Vitebsk was completed in November 2018. Penetron crystalline technology helped revitalize the intersection's underground pedestrian tunnel, previously plagued for years by constant active water leaks.

A city of over 345,000 inhabitants in northeastern Belarus, Vitebsk is the country's fourth largest city and the capital of the Vitebsk Region. The city has been an important cultural and commercial hub during its long history. Today, Vitebsk is still an important center of arts and culture for Belarus and the birthplace of Marc Chagall. His home, a popular tourist destination, has been preserved as a museum.

Looking for a Waterproofing Solution
Construction work on a key traffic and railway intersection on the Moskovskiy Prospekt, which connects the city center with the city's new Bilieva district and provides a direct access to the P21 (Vitebsk-Smolensk-Moscow) highway, is set for completion in 2020. However, the project engineers needed a waterproofing solution for the previously constructed pedestrian walkway and contacted Penetron for an answer.

"The intersection's pedestrian underpass was originally built in the 1990s but never put into operation because of the constant water leaks," explains Alexander Yakushkov, Director of Penetron Vitebsk, the Penetron distributor for the region.

Finally, a Dry Tunnel after Nearly 30 Years
PENETRON ADMIX was recommended for the repair work to the underpass. Easily mixed in during batching and unaffected by climatic conditions, PENETRON ADMIX becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix. The PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete was used to fill the retaining walls and the floor of the underground pedestrian crossing. PENECRETE MORTAR was used to fill out and seal the construction joints. The crystalline waterproofing and protection technology successfully repaired the leaking tunnel, resulting in a dry environment - safe for a long-anticipated walk after nearly 30 years.

"The next step is constructing a tunnel under the adjacent railway," adds Alexander Yakushkov. "The Penetron System of crystalline products will provide the superior protection and durability demanded by the engineers for that part of the project as well!"
