Georgia 'Math Night' Gives Parents Resources to Boost Student Math Skills

SMYRNA, Ga., Dec. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mathnasium is changing lives through math across the U.S. by cohosting a series of Math Nights. In partnership with National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), North America's leading, math-only learning center is boosting student math skills while supporting their partner's STEM + Families initiative. Last week, Smyrna students and their families attended a Math Night at Russell Elementary School, where they played games, had fun and were inspired to pursue STEM education and careers.

Facilitated by local Mathnasium franchisee Shalini Sawhney, the event provided over 125 students and parents with an evening of specially developed games, created to inspire a fun, captivating environment for families and students to learn math together.

"Math Nights are an excellent way to show students how math can be fun and to give parents resources to engage their kids with STEM-based activities at home," said Sawhney. "Meaningful experiences can turn math from something intimidating into something that is not only fun, but beneficial."

Sawhney held a Math Night for Russell Elementary School in 2017 and this year's event had a similarly impressive turnout, a testament to the importance of this initiative.

"Decades of research proves that families play a critical role in children's success and achievement. Collaborative experiences between children and guardians have a major influence on a child's educational and career decisions," said Jim Accomando, president of National PTA. "Through Math Night, we are able to inspire family engagement to strengthen STEM education, bridging the STEM gap and helping children realize their fullest potential."

Including Russell Elementary, 35 local PTAs were each awarded $1,000 and will co-host a STEM + Families Math Night with a local Mathnasium center as a part of the 2018 National PTA STEM + Families Math Grant, sponsored by Mathnasium. Mathnasium is a founding sponsor of National PTA's STEM + Families initiative, which provides these math grants to local elementary schools to increase access to STEM - and particularly math - experiences for students and families.

"Every single person that I spoke to, including parents, students and teachers, had such a great time," said Jessica Jones, Russell Elementary's PTA co-president. "I can't think of anything that I would have changed or improved. The teachers are asking how they can incorporate more math fun into the classroom, and parents want to play math games at home with their students."

Math Night exemplifies Mathnasium and National PTA's mission to engage, educate and connect families and students with enjoyable math experiences. To learn more, please visit pta.org/stem/math .
