Vernier Software & Technology Launches New Activities to Introduce Students to Coding

BEAVERTON, Ore., Feb. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Vernier Software & Technology released two new activity modules to help elementary and middle school students learn about important coding concepts. The new modules, Coding with Codey Rocky: Mission to Mars and Coding with mBot: Life Hacks, introduce problem-solving strategies, nurture creativity, strengthen critical thinking skills, and build students' confidence while helping them learn block-based coding.

"Coding is a valuable 21(st) century skill that is heavily used--and sought after--in today's workforce," said John Wheeler, CEO of Vernier Software & Technology. "Our coding solutions, which range from entry-level, block-based languages to advanced instrument-control programming, help students develop this skill and learn important STEM concepts starting at an early age."

The new modules, available exclusively through Vernier, introduce students to important coding concepts aligned with CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards as they successfully program and troubleshoot the robots through a series of activities. Each module is free with the purchase of the applicable coding robot.

The Coding with Codey Rocky: Mission to Mars module includes six activities in which beginner-level students program their Codey Rocky robot to explore, learn about, and survive on Mars.

The Coding with mBot: Life Hacks module includes seven activities that help students solve practical problems using robotics and coding, from tracking endangered wildlife to creating prosthetic limbs. With the mBot STEM Classroom Kit, they build on their basic coding and troubleshooting skills and learn to program their mCore while using the engineering design process to build the physical robots. As students complete the seven activities in the module, they use flowcharts to organize thoughts, conduct research, become familiar with control blocks, understand how and when to use variables, and approach troubleshooting in a systematic way.
