About 4,000 children, parents, teachers, government officials, non-profit executives and business leaders are expected to attend the free symposium—Northern Virginia’s largest K-12 STEM event.

The 2019 symposium, which was built around the theme of “The Power of Curiosity,” will feature interactive exhibits like flight simulators and 3D printers, along with top science fair projects from more than 20 local students preparing for regional competition.

Speakers this year will include:

  • Former astronauts Dr. Sandy Magnus and Dr. Lawrence DeLucas
  • Riverside Research CEO Steve Omick
  • Dr. Ann Bonitatibus, principal of Thomas Jefferson High School of Science & Technology
  • Dr. Tinell Priddy, principal of Academies of Loudon

“The STEM Symposium is exploring the power of curiosity, which is so important to nurturing lifelong interest in STEM fields,” says Riverside Research CEO Steve Omick. “Riverside is proud to bring a miniature version of our company’s research lab, the Open Innovation Center (OIC) to the STEM Symposium. In the mini-OIC, students can see firsthand how the concepts they’re learning in school translate to high-tech careers in areas like artificial intelligence, plasma physics, and radar engineering.”

The event will also feature the second annual STEM Awards program, which recognizes Best STEM-supporting Business of 2019, Most Inspiring STEM Executive of 2019, STEM Rising Star and Best STEM Non-Profit. To qualify, nominees must be able to attend the awards ceremony on March 30.

“We look forward to celebrating the power of curiosity with attendees and supporters at this year’s symposium. It’s amazing how far the event has come in the last six years and we’re proud to offer this opportunity free to the National Capital Region community,” said JD Kathuria, founder and CEO of WashingtonExec. “Participants will be able to get up-close-and-personal with some of the area’s most notable STEM professionals—including former astronauts, innovative educators and technology professionals.”

The symposium is open to the public and credentialed media. Free, advance registration is required via the event website. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site.
