Spectrum Pharmacy Products to Feature USP <800> Compliance and Other Compounding Training at Compounders on Capitol Hill

Spectrum Pharmacy Products, a leading North American manufacturer and distributor of pharmaceutical compounding chemicals, equipment and supplies, will be showcasing its “USP <800> Compliance - Improving the Safety of Compounded Preparations" classes as well as Spectrum Pharmacy Institute’s other diverse course offerings at Compounders on Capitol Hill (CCH) in Washington, D.C., May 18-21. Spectrum will be raffling off a free course to one CCH attendee, a value of up to $1,395.

Elizabeth Ferguson-Brown, Spectrum Chemical Vice President, said, "Spectrum has been serving the needs of compounders for decades with our quality APIs and excipients. At our recently established state-of-the-art Spectrum Pharmacy Institute (SPI) in New Brunswick, NJ, we offer compounding pharmacists and pharmacy technicians accredited continuing education courses taught by leading subject matter experts. In light of the urgency surrounding USP<800> this year, we offer both SPI classes in our NJ facility and ‘roadshow’ classes in several US cities.”

December 1, 2019 is the official date for compliance with the USP General Chapter <800> Hazardous Drugs (HDs) - Handling in Healthcare Settings. Some state boards of pharmacy are taking a soft approach to enforcement, giving health care workers in those states less of a sense of urgency. However, pharmacies licensed in multiple states are required to comply with the regulations and standards of those additional states. Many state boards will adopt USP <800> in December 2019, and others have already begun to inspect pharmacies based on USP <800> standards and state regulations for hazardous drug handling that pre-date USP <800>.

In Spectrum Pharmacy Institute’s in-house or roadshow course titled, “USP <800> Compliance - Improving the Safety of Compounded Preparations,” attendees will learn strategies for protecting all compounding and administration personnel in handling HD's. The USP<800> Roadshow course qualifies for 6.25 contact hours (0.625 CEUs), while the SPI class includes additional hands-on training on proper techniques for donning, doffing, disposing of PPE; and HD spill clean-up for a total of 10.7 contact hours (1.07 CEUs).

All Spectrum Pharmacy Institute training is accredited by the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University, or the American College of Apothecaries. The hands-on, compounding training is designed to help compounders and pharmacy technicians remain at the forefront of the latest research, regulations and trends while earning continuing education credits. Both new compounders as well as compounding veterans will benefit from the courses' expert instructors, hands-on training and up-to-date content.

Spectrum Pharmacy Institute offers more than just USP 800 courses, including:
