PG&E Names Human Resources VP Mary King as Chief Diversity Officer

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced that Vice President, Human Resources Mary King will add new duties as the company’s Chief Diversity Officer.

In her role, King will oversee PG&E’s diversity and inclusion efforts, which have earned the company a perfect 100 percent rating on the Corporate Equality Index for 16 straight years and a 100 score on the Disability Equality Index for the fifth consecutive year.

PG&E has established itself as a corporate leader in diversity and inclusion through the company’s 11 employee resource groups and three engineering networks, which promote employee engagement, college recruiting and development; and initiatives such as “It Starts with Why,” which uses employee stories to empower every employee to speak up for diversity and inclusion and emphasizes the importance of emotional safety.

“At PG&E, diversity and inclusion is a cornerstone of our values and essential in our mission to provide safe and reliable service to our customers every day, while aligning us with the values and history of the communities we serve. Mary has been very active in this space for years and I expect our D&I efforts to flourish under her leadership,” said PG&E Corporation CEO and President Bill Johnson.

“When we value the unique experiences of our employees and encourage them to bring their whole selves to work, we simply get better outcomes for our customers. I’m looking forward to furthering PG&E’s legacy as an industry leader and champion of diversity and inclusion,” said King.

King, a former captain in the U.S. Army and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is currently on the board of directors for two nonprofits: the Sentinels of Freedom, a national, San Ramon-based organization focused on helping severely wounded post-9/11 veterans complete their higher education; and Leadership California, dedicated to the development and advancement of women.

“Mary’s counsel has been invaluable. Her understanding of veterans’ needs when transitioning into civilian life has greatly benefited our joint efforts with PG&E in assisting our veterans into higher education and meaningful careers. Mary’s passion for diversity and inclusion makes her a perfect fit as PG&E’s Chief Diversity Officer,” said Mike Conklin, Chairman and CEO of Sentinels of Freedom.

King, who has been with PG&E for more than 10 years, also oversees the company’s diversity and inclusion function, talent management, total rewards and HR services.

Before coming to PG&E, King held positions at Calpine in Middletown, Calif., and Indianapolis Power and Light. Besides being a captain in the U.S. Army, King was a platoon leader and executive officer. After her service in the Army, she earned her J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
