Bioscience Association Manitoba Celebrates Global Biotech Week

Bioscience Association Manitoba (BAM) is proud to celebrate Manitoba’s $9 billion biotech industry through a series of events during the 2019 Global Biotech Week. The events held from September 23rd to 27th will bring business owners, community leaders, industry stakeholders, researchers and students together to increase awareness about careers in bioscience.

The purpose of Global Biotech Week is to raise awareness of the biotech industry and its global potential among policymakers, policy influencers and the public. Each year, biotech companies and industry associations from around the world join together to celebrate and highlight the successes of the biotech industry and its global significance.

“Manitoba’s biotech industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the province. Our biotech companies meet specific needs of the healthcare systems, food processors and other sectors of Manitoba’s economy. It is important to increase awareness of the industry’s potential to ensure that it keeps making great strides and attracting good investment.” – Tracey Maconachie, President of Bioscience Association Manitoba.

According to the recently released BAM Industry Profile Study, Manitoba’s biotech industry contributes $7.5 billion to the total provincial GDP. This fast-growing industry consists of over 700 businesses that are attracting investments and contributing to the development of our workforce.

BAM’s events will include academic field trips for students to biotech facilities across the province, an international pitch competition featuring local tech companies, the association’s Annual General Meeting and a special breakfast event at the Manitoba Legislative Building on September 25th. The breakfast will feature news from the CEO of Research Manitoba about recent grants recipients and a presentation from a new researcher from the Chronic Disease Innovation Centre.
