Live Power Expands Reach, Improves Service to Provide Information on Midcontinent (MISO) Power Markets

DENVER, Sept. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Live Power, the energy data innovator offering power markets real-time generation and transmission data, is expanding its network to cover Midcontinent (MISO) power markets, where it will provide the latest version of its power grid remote sensors.

"To start, we will deploy 300 of our upgraded sensors in MISO, focused on wind, congestion and the interconnections between neighboring regions," said Bill Townsend, Live Power CEO.

These upgraded sensors, made possible by capital Live Power raised early in 2019 to facilitate expansion, include faster processing, increased communications reliability, and more precision in measuring magnetic fields emanating from high voltage power lines.

Live Power's current plans call for monitoring 131 GW of generating capacity in the MISO market and responding to customer requests that the new network focus on four areas: regional interties or interconnections, congested areas, wind, and the Gulf Coast.

"Monitoring the interconnection of transmission lines to neighboring regions and the north-south tie lines will provide greater detail on the energy flows between regions than what is currently known to power traders," said Townsend. "This leads to greater understanding of cross region congestion and opportunities to hedge that risk."

Because congestion on the power grid is a major concern in MISO, Live Power will monitor heavily congested transmission lines known as binding constraints as well as the power plants that can alleviate or exacerbate those points of congestion.

Live Power also will work with Yes Energy, which provides a market visibility platform for energy traders in North American power markets, collecting thousands of disparate data sources, including data from key partners. The congestion analysis tools of Yes Energy provide Live Power with precise targeting of constraint-related generation and the 'shift factors' each generator exerts on any particular constraint. This allows Live Power to deploy sensors to illuminate any constraint.

"The growth in wind generation over the past five years has substantially altered the way the power grid operates in this region," said Townsend. "Live Power will bring to the market every 60 seconds data on the amount of generation provided by wind farms in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Iowa."

In the South, Live Power will be focused on the Gulf Coast and in the New Orleans area. This area has a lot of industrial activity that both consumes and produces large amounts of power. Live Power will work to make this part of the grid much more transparent to facilitate competitive power markets.

Live Power is actively deploying sensors now in the northern parts of MISO working its way south as the winter sets in. It expects to complete this expansion by early 2020.

About Live Power:
Live Power headquartered in Boulder, Colorado currently operates a network of 100s of sensors that spans 18 states and 2 regional markets (PJM and ERCOT). The data is sold to utilities, generators and financial institutions that buy and sell electric power in the wholesale market. These customers use the data to manage their positions in this very volatile commodity market.

Live Power was founded by Pal Even Gaarder, a Norwegian physicist, who came to the U.S. in 2014 after building a similar grid sensing network in Scandinavia. The current CEO, Bill Townsend, has over 20 years of experience in building commodity trading data and applications.
