Connor Wilson, Co-Founder at Thursday, outlined the Single Herd project as the culmination of a two-year search for higher-quality leathers. “At Thursday, we want to constantly raise the bar for product quality and ethical manufacturing. With the Single Herd project, customers now have perfect visibility into where this leather comes from and how these animals were raised. We already source nearly all our hides in the US, and this is another step forward for the American footwear industry.”

Every pair of the Single Herd Indigo Vanguard is made in the USA through the following process:

  • Cattle hides are sourced entirely from open range grass fed cattle raised at White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, GA. White Oak is a recognized leader in regenerative farming, capturing 3.5 pounds of carbon for every 1 pound of beef raised.
  • These hides are tanned into an exclusive leather - Indigo Chromexcel - by Horween Leather Company in Chicago, IL. Horween has been in continuous operation since 1905 and they continue to be diligent in working with environmental authorities to meet and exceed local benchmarks.
  • This leather is used by skilled bootmakers at a 2nd-generation factory in Arkansas to manufacture the Indigo Vanguard, a Goodyear-welted service boot that is virtually waterproof and completely resoleable for years of wear.
  • Each pair includes a complimentary gift certificate from Crowd Cow, the leading marketplace for high-quality craft meats, and a distributor of White Oak products.

The Single Herd project builds on an existing record of innovation in product excellence by Thursday and its manufacturing partners. As John Culliton of Horween highlighted, “This is a milestone in our 114-year history. Horween has always prided itself on doing things the right way, which isn’t always the fastest or the cheapest way. When Thursday first proposed sourcing hides exclusively from a single farm, the production challenges were daunting. The end result is a completely unique leather that shows real character.”

The farm-to-boot nature of the Single Herd program places it within a broader movement toward more conscientious consumption. “Finding partners like these to promote high animal welfare, land regeneration, and the revivals of rural communities provides customers a choice. Now, more than ever, shoppers can choose how they want the world to be - full of broken, degraded cycles or full of cycles that repeat and feed one another in symbiosis,” highlighted Jenni Harris of White Oak.

Converting bovine hides into high-quality leather also completes White Oak’s already impressive environmental commitment. “Crowd Cow is excited about the Single Herd project’s unique transparency, craftsmanship, and zero waste. Produced with hides from White Oak Pastures in Georgia, each pair minimizes waste, utilizing beyond nose to tail,” explained Joe Heitzeberg, Co-Founder and CEO of Crowd Cow.

The Single Herd Indigo Vanguard is available exclusively at www.thursdayboots.com for $265 pre-tax. The boot features Indigo Chromexcel, a hand-finished, hot-stuffed tannage in a dark blue colorway created exclusively for Thursday Boot Company. The leather is made with hides sourced from White Oak Pastures.
