Rescuers tried everything to keep Ellie alive. They fed him the food and milk he needs to help him regain his strength and boost his immune system but he rejected them. They even tried having him play with other animals but none of these worked.

The baby elephant's physical condition wasn't the only cause for concern. Ellie's mental state wasn't improving either. With no herd or other animals to bond with, he became lonely, lethargic, and withdrawn. His psychological well-being was on a decline and wildlife experts weren't too positive that he would survive until they brought in Duma who would eventually become Ellie's best friend.
