Hickey Metal Fabrication Celebrates 80 Years in Business

Hickey Metal Fabrication of Salem, Ohio, is celebrating their 80th year in business in 2022 with a focus on increased automation and ongoing expansion.

Four generations strong, with 400,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities spread across seven plants, Hickey Metal forges ahead, with deeply rooted core values, as the Midwest’s leading vertically integrated metal fabricator. From manual hammering and welding to robotic systems and automation, Hickey Metal adopts every industry-wide shift in its processing. “With our focus on quality and a continuous investment in the latest industry technologies, we offer our customers a complete end-to-end metal fabrication process,” says Hickey Metal President Leo Hickey.

The ever-expanding company is currently adding 25,000 square feet to their seventh plant. “The enlarged plant will greatly increase our capacity and room for growth,” states Hickey Metal VP Adam Hickey. “The new addition will include a state-of-the-art Trumpf 7030 12KW laser center, which can run any gauge steel up to ½ inch, completely automated. Parts will then be fed to two Trumpf 5000 automated bend cells and finished welding in Lincoln FAB-PAK FHS head and tail stock robot cells.” Completion date for the Plant Seven extension is mid-December.

Their push to deep automation has exponentially increased their production abilities. “By integrating new technology throughout our seven-plant operation, our scale of capacity has escalated considerably,” Leo Hickey states. “And that has translated into larger and more involved orders completed faster.”

Hickey Metal Fabrication finishes all laser and plasma cutting, bending, machining, robotic and manual welding, in-house. “This is metal fabrication from start to finish—we burn it, bend it, weld it, assemble it, powder coat it, and ship it out,” Adam Hickey states.

The plant expansion also creates job opportunities at Hickey Metal. “The new building will allow us to bring on skilled labor, people who can understand drawings and programming,” Adam Hickey says. “We will also be hiring engineers who know the 3D world and can work with advanced robotic software. For anyone with experience in the metal fabrication industry, this is a great opportunity to work with the latest technology.”
