Centro de Investigación en Tecnologías Aeroespaciales – CITAE (Aerospace Technologies Research Centre), is one of five research centres of the Colombian Air Force that is responsible for research and development activities related  to the Colombian Space Program, the formative research activities in support of the Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Aviation Administration Programs of  the Military Aviation School (EMAVI) and the national aerospace leadership of the Colombian Air Force through the Cauca Valley Aerospace Cluster – CVAC.

CITAE was created on July 25th 2002 at the Military Aviation School under resolution No. 00311, dated 2002 of the Colombian Air Force.

At its inception and thanks to the broad and visionary leadership of Mr. Aguilar, CITAE adopted the FAC X-001 flagship project related to aircraft composites, in response to the urgent need for the Air Force to produce trainer aircraft to replace the aging T-41D Mescalero and T-34B Mentor fleet, which for many years had allowed the training of the pilots of the National Military Aviation School.

To develop, manage and promote aerospace research and development based on internal abilities or with the support of external entities through the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of research projects, technological development and innovation, as well as strategies and programs oriented to strengthen and promote the aerospace development of the Colombian Air Force, the defense sector and the nation.

Wind Tunnel

Prototyping Machine
 
Mobile Propulsion Laboratory
This laboratory is used to check the functionality of the subsystems that are part of the propulsion system of the rocket, using as oxidiser and fuel liquid, oxygen and kerosene respectively, tested under simulated conditions similar to the actual operating conditions.
 
Injector Laboratory
This laboratory is used to validate the design and manufacture of the injectors that utilise cryogenic liquid oxidizer.

FAC X-001 Single-Seater Aircraft in Composite Materials

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of building an ultra-light aircraft with the implementation of existing technologies in composite materials. It is the first ultra-light aircraft to have been built entirely within the institution and Colombia.

 

Low-Orbit Satellites Launcher

CITAE has proposed the construction of a liquid propellant launcher capable of placing a payload of 10 kg, equivalent to a picosatellite, in a low orbit and at a height of about 180 km.

AFIT

1. Validation of damage through inspection of composite joints with Z-pins

 

This proposal is a collaborative effort among AFOSR/SAORD, AFRL/RXLP, AFIT/ ENV and CITAE. The objective of this research activity is to investigate the use of appropriate sensors to determine the damages developed in T-shaped section joints with Z-pins.

 

2. Modeling of failure mechanism in composite materials with Z-pins

 

Delamination is the most feared failure mode in composite materials and structures. For this reason, CITAE has developed joints with Z-pins, to balance strength and damage tolerance on the outer surface of the aircraft and in laminated composite bonded joints.

 

FTD Calima T-90 Flight Simulator

Development of the T-90 Calima trainer aircraft, facilitating the training of Military Aviation School pilots in the primary flying phase.

Subsonic Wind Tunnel

The wind tunnel generates a constant and stable airflow that can reach a controlled speed of up to 100km/h, allowing the emulation of the behaviour of the model in order to analyze specific characteristics. This system uses a control platform with Labview V8.5 software that replicates the pitch and yaw movement in order to analyse and acquire data, such as lift, drag and side force, as well as wind speed, pitch and yaw angles.
