The general objective of the Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Programme is to contribute to the transition of agriculture and livestock farming systems in Balochistan (Pakistan) achieving lower water intensity and improving environmental and economic sustainability. The overall total budget for the programme is EUR 40 000 000.

The programme will be implemented through two separate implementing contracts working closely together under a project steering committee.

The technical assistance provided through this service contract will contribute to these three project’s specific objectives:

1) Strengthened governance of water resources and Rangelands;

2) Alternative agricultural and livestock farming systems developed based on low water agro-economy, including agronomic practices leading to groundwater replenishment;

3) Increased availability of qualified agro-technology cadres able to integrate and provide on- farm technical know-how and climate-relevant advise to farmers.

The general objective of the contract is to contribute to the transition of the rural irrigated agriculture in the arid regions of Balochistan towards lower water use, sustainable agricultural and livestock farming systems.

To achieve improved, sustainable water and land management in the province of Balochistan, the programme is focused on four specific objectives:

1) Strengthened governance of water resources and rangelands in Balochistan;

2) Alternative agricultural and livestock farming systems developed based on low water agroeconomy, including agronomic practices leading to groundwater replenishment;

3) Strengthened value chains for a climate-resilient, low water economy among male and female producers and service providers;

4) Increased availability of qualified agro-technology cadres able to integrate and provide on farm technical know-how and climate-relevant advise to farmers.

The Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Programme will be structured in two components working tightly together and involving other implementing partners. The technical assistance provided through this service contract will contribute particularly to strengthen water governance (specific objective 1), foster more efficient water use in agriculture (specific objective 2), and train qualified technicians in the sector (specific objective 4).
