Market research - Nutrient Management (NM) strategies and performance measures A nutrient management (NM) objective is definable, measurable and improvable, but vague objectives combined with limited measurement make it difficult to assess NM performance. The lack of consensus and use of NM metrics across industry is an obstacle to monitoring NM improvement. Measuring NM performance is rare, and then mainly accidental (implementation mistakes) or done by others (small plot trials), so the review step is adaptive management with changes to NM plans largely driven by gut feel. This provides an opportunity to improve strategic NM for growers and advisors through defining NM objectives and creating a catalogue of metrics and tools available to measure, monitor and review NM specific to their farm. Noting that there is diversity in grower motivation and objectives for their farm and across the value chain, GRDC is seeking market research and consultation of various stakeholders.
