Irish Fulbright Scholar, International Expert on Digital Extraction to Collaborate with University of New Haven Cyber Faculty

WEST HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University of New Haven today announced it will host a Fulbright TechImpact Scholar from University College in Dublin, Ireland.

David Lillis, assistant professor of computer science, will work with a well-known University of New Haven researcher, Frank Breitinger, an assistant professor of computer science and co-director of the University's cyber forensics group.

Fulbright TechImpact Scholar Awards are research grants for Irish citizens to complete short-term, non-commercial projects and research in the U.S.

"Hosting a Fulbright scholar as motivated and talented as Dr. Lillis is a great opportunity for the University, our students, and our ever-growing worldwide network of researchers," said Breitinger.

Lillis will spend his time continuing to study ways to extract digital evidence on devices that have been seized as part of police investigations.

The cyber forensics group at the University of New Haven has attracted worldwide attention for extracting information from devices and smart phone apps and recently began the Artifact Genome Project, which archives similar discoveries made around the world. The project, modelled after the Human Genome Project, allows researchers to solve digital puzzles quickly rather than having to start from scratch in every case.

Lillis wanted to visit the University of New Haven because "they're ahead of the curve in terms of anticipating where the field needs to go. They've taken a leadership role in the cyber forensics community."
