Florida Vet Named National Chaplain of The American Legion

A Korean War era veteran of the U.S. Navy was appointed national chaplain of the two-million member American Legion during the organization’s national convention in Reno, Nev., today.

After serving in the Navy, Robert Allen Vick volunteered in the Indiana Guard/Reserve, Military Department of Indiana, and retired as a full colonel. At the time of his retirement, he received a “Hoosier Hero” award.

Vick is a member of American Legion Paradise Post 79, New Port Richey, Fla., and has been a Legionnaire since 1983. He is also a member of the Sons of the American Legion and is a past department chaplain for the American Legion Department of Florida.

He received his ministerial training at Baptist Bible College, Springfield, Mo. from 1957 to 1960 and Trinity Bible Institute. Vick was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at the Grace Baptist Church in Galena, Mo., where he later served as pastor from 1958 to 1960.

Vick resides in New Port Richey, Fla., and has been married to Marion Janet (Tomey) Vick since 1956. They have four sons, Robert, Carl, Aaron and Dale, ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Vick says he “feels called to serve the spiritual needs of other veterans and their families.” He is one of 12 national officers in The American Legion.
