The global aseptic packaging market in the food industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 11% during the forecast period. Aseptic packaging is extensively used in the dairy industry. As dairy products have lower acid content, they are vulnerable to contamination by microorganisms. Therefore, aseptic packaging is used to increase the shelf life of such products. Procedures such as UHT processing of dairy products are gaining popularity and driving the growth of the global aseptic packaging market in the food industry.

Shakti Jakhar, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on packaging sector, says, “Rising obesity and diabetes levels along with increasing consumer awareness regarding healthy diet are driving the demand for healthy products. The dairy industry is set to capitalize on this trend. Companies are providing products such as probiotic yogurt and cholesterol lowering butter.”

Rising popularity of personalization in packaging

Companies are using different ways to engage consumers and increase their brand loyalty. To achieve this, companies have started to offer personalized packaging that appeals to consumers. Technological advances have facilitated an upsurge in personalized packaging during the past couple of years.

“Coca-Cola's Share a Coke Campaign is in its sixth year as of 2017. The campaign has so far featured different labels such as people's names and movie quotes. This marketing strategy is helping the brand to engage with its target audience. In China, the campaign that rolled out in June 2017 features the coke bottle with packaging that is intended to appeal the Chinese youth by adopting codes and symbols that are used by these youths to communicate,” according to Shakti.

New alternative ways of heating food and beverages to kill microorganisms

Traditional methods of heating products to kill microorganisms were affecting the quality of the product. Hence, these methods are being replaced by new ways, such as high-temperature short time (HTST) processing. In this processing, products are subjected to intense high temperature but for a short time, thus reducing the heating time and preserving the nutrient value of the products.

Ohmic heating methods such as electrical resistance heating are used for the sterilization process of food products. An electrical circuit is made in such a way that food is made to be a part of that circuit, and current flows through it. Due to the internal resistance of food, heat is dissipated. It is observed that around 90% of the electrical energy is converted into heat.

Increasing importance of recycling of food and beverage packaging among consumers

Consumers are increasingly considering the environment while making purchase decisions. In 2016, it was estimated that around 70% to 80% of the people in the US expect their choice of food and beverage brands to help increase the recycling of their packages actively.

As the popularity and demand for aseptic packaging containers are increasing, the need for recycling them is also increasing. However, recycling these containers is difficult because they have different layers made up of different materials. Approximately, there are 6 to 8 different layers such as aluminum and low-density polyethylene plastic film.
