Tackifiers are chemical compounds that are used in formulating adhesives and represent the major part of the hot-melt and pressure sensitive adhesives. They are used in a wide-range of applications, such as tapes and labels, assembly adhesives, various construction adhesives, bookbinding adhesives, and adhesives used for footwear, leather, and rubber articles.

Tackifiers are either made from naturally occurring materials or produced synthetically. The main feedstock used in manufacturing tackifiers are rosin resins, petroleum resins, and terpene resins. Petroleum resins are by far the largely used feedstock, and C5 aromatic aliphatic resins, C9 aromatic resins, and C5/C9 aliphatic/aromatic resins are the major resins used for this purpose. Rosin resin is the oldest resin used in adhesive manufacturing and is obtained from pine and coniferous trees. Terpene resins are renewable resins, which are derived from terpene feedstock, either from wood sources or citrus fruits

The tackifiers market is driven by the growing urban infrastructure in the developing countries and a high demand for hot-melt adhesives in the Asia-Pacific region. However, this market faces certain drawbacks, such as volatility in the raw material prices and shifting of petroleum cracking towards lighter feed.
