US Product Portfolio for Laparoscopic Devices 2017 - MedFolio

LONDON, Oct. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The proliferation of surgical scopes can date back as far as 70 AD, when they were made with simple hollow tubes that included a magnifying lens and a small light. Now, surgical scopes have grown and evolved alongside minimally invasive surgery. There are two types of laparoscopes: rod lens and a digital laparoscope.

The first kind of laparoscope consists of a lens, a fiber optic cable system and a video camera. The lens is inside a long telescope that is also connected to the camera. The camera is then connected to an image processor where the surgeon can view what he is looking at through a monitor. The digital laparoscope, in contrast, is already embedded with an image processor that is placed at the end of the scope. Therefore, it does not need the rod lens system. However, each requires a fiber optic cable system to be hooked up to a Xenon or Halogen light source to help illuminate the abdominal cavity. Laparoscopes are mainly used for procedures to treat gynecological conditions.
