Zero energy buildings (ZEBs) are those buildings that do not depend on the grid for their own energy needs, They make themselves independent of the grid by improving the energy efficiency and also by depending on onsite renewable energy generation to meet their energy needs.

These buildings depend on different solutions and technologies like solar power, geothermal, energy storage, energy management, the building design, components and the architecture itself in order to achieve the zero energy status.

The energy efficiency part of the building can be achieved by improving the building design, orientation, the materials used to construct the building and the way these materials prevent the loss of heat and thermal energy or even allow excess radiation resulting in heating of the premises.

This can be complemented by the use of more energy efficient loads like efficient lighting and heating and air conditioning options. Geothermal energy can be used in combination with the HVAC systems to achieve efficient thermal systems for the buildings and energy management solutions can be used to enable effective interaction between loads. The energy management solutions help monitor the energy usage, identify areas in buildings that have more losses and devise methods to improve the efficiency of these zones.
