No permits, no CEQA--but Build Group vows to break ground on bold S.F. beachfront project Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A massive development of oceanfront property in San Francisco set to begin Saturday morning could see more than two-dozen construction projects underway before noon. A development team led by Build Group and RIM Architects has partnered with acoustical engineers Charles M. Salter Associates and ZFA Structural Engineers in ambitious plans for one of the projects, which will break ground alongside those of other heavyweights from the construction, architecture and engineering industries. Despite lacking planning approvals or building permits customary for the industry, professional expertise showcased in Northern California's largest sandcastle competition will include structural design, skilled craftsmanship, jaw-dropping creativity, and more.

"It's a high-stakes faceoff that industry competitors take seriously, but it's inspiring to see the whole development community come together to support arts and architecture education for Bay Area public school kids," said Ross Edwards, CEO of Build Group. "The Leap Sandcastle Classic has been a great success for a great cause for a long time. Build Group and our industry partners are proud to take part in its 35th year. But most of all, we're excited to get to work on Saturday with our new development partners -- the kids from Gordon Lau Elementary -- to build a sandcastle that contends for the title."

The Leap Sandcastle Classic partners local schools with architecture, design, engineering and construction companies in sandcastle-building teams for an annual competition to raise funds for high quality arts and architecture education for more than 7,500 Bay Area public school students. The Build Group and RIM Architects-led team, named "Mystery Mansion," supports the Gordon J. Lau Elementary School in San Francisco's Chinatown as its partner school.
