Rudolph Libbe Group wins Build America Award for ProMedica Headquarters

TOLEDO, Ohio, March 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rudolph Libbe Group has been honored with a Construction Risk Partners Build America Award for its work on the ProMedica headquarters in downtown Toledo. The award, presented by the Associated General Contractors of America, recognized the ProMedica project as one of the best construction projects of 2017 and the best building renovation project valued between $10 million and $99 million.

Rudolph Libbe Inc. served as construction manager and GEM Inc. performed structural steel work for the ProMedica Steam Plant and the former KeyBank building, now known as the Junction Building.

"These awards epitomize the latest and greatest projects the construction industry has to offer," said Art Daniel, the association's president and president of AR Daniel Construction Services in Cedar Hill, Texas. "The construction firms recognized have utilized outstanding skill, collaboration and innovation to complete some of America's most complex and ambitious projects of 2017."

ProMedica selected the two very different local landmarks to house its administrative offices. The project involved extensive renovations of the 78,465-square-foot Steam Plant and the 102,101-square-foot five-story Junction Building.

Listed in 2003 on the National Register of Historic Places, the Steam Plant stood empty for 30 years before being purchased by ProMedica. The Steam Plant restoration and renovation created a contemporary, four-story office building inside a single-story, structurally delicate shell. A new, three-story addition with floor-to-ceiling windows adjoins the Steam Plant's east wall. Elements of the old plant were replicated or carefully preserved, including original steel roof trusses and a 13-ton bridge crane on original crane rail which is now suspended above The Steam Plant's four-story atrium.

The complete interior renovation of the Junction building created office space on the top three floors, a basement YMCA and two ground-floor restaurants. The Junction was redesigned with an open office layout.
