EdTech Startup Extempore Completes $420k Seed Round

Extempore makes frequent speaking practice effortless for instructors and students

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Extempore, the Speaking Practice App that simplifies language education for academic institutions across the country and abroad, announces today the closing of a $420,000 seed round, led by Minneapolis' Syndicate Fund.

Founded in 2015, Extempore is being used by nearly 10,000 foreign language teachers and their students to measure language aptitude and promote learning by assigning speaking activities. The easy-to-use application enables instructor-led language learning anywhere and anytime. Extempore is used by K-12 schools and universities, including academic icons like Harvard and Temple University.

"We have a proven, well-liked product and now is the time to pour fuel on the fire," says Carlos Seoane, co-founder and CEO. "We have just seen a 100 percent renewal rate for the spring semester, which validates not only the concept but also the attachment that our users feel for the service."

Extempore plans to use the funds to increase their marketing and sales efforts, as well as to accelerate development of the platform, incorporating feedback from users.

"Our product uses the latest technologies from Apple and Google to build a user-friendly experience across mobile and the web. We're helping schools and universities by replacing their traditional on-premise language labs with a cloud-based system that allows institutions to save money, space and time, tailoring their teaching to their students' needs, in class or online," says Stephen Fluin, technical co-founder.

About Extempore

Extempore makes learning a language more efficient by simplifying the process of speaking practice. Today's instructor-led language learning process is broken, placing impractical demands on students and teachers alike. Most teaching is driven by written and reading exercises, leaving students without an opportunity to practice their oral skills. Unlike consumer applications such as Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, Extempore is a tool that builds on the instructor's experience and knowledge of his or her students to improve language acquisition.
