DNV GL Healthcare Webinar Demonstrates How Accreditation Process Can Improve Healthcare Quality

Case Studies, Data Show Improved Outcomes and Patient, Staff Satisfaction

MILFORD, Ohio, March 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- DNV GL Healthcare's March 1 webinar, "Leveraging Hospital Accreditation For Continuous Quality Improvement," made some of the clearest linkages yet between the nation's fastest-growing accreditation firm and an improved quality of care for patients.

According to one of the webinar presenters, William Ritchie, PhD., a professor at James Madison University in Virginia, hospitals that used DNV GL for accreditation compared to the Joint Commission showed statistically significant better outcomes regarding 30-day readmission rates, care transition and the Patient Experience Score from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

"The nurses reported they looked forward to the DNV approach," said Ritchie of the process, which includes using the ISO 9001 quality system and annual surveys.

DNV GL Chief Executive Officer Patrick Horine said that the detailed-oriented yet flexible ISO 9001 was a process approach "very befitting to healthcare."

As an example, Horine cited Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, S.C. It used ISO 9001 to establish a framework for a new 340B to purchase discounted medications in bulk. The result was $3 million in annual savings for drug purchases, up from a projected $2.5 million. After adopting ISO 9001, customer satisfaction scores also rose, as did discharged patients saying they felt safe and secure in the hospital.

According to Horine, DNV GL's goal regarding accreditation is "to be more meaningful for hospitals, to learn, and to get away from an inspection-oriented approach."

More than 150 representatives throughout the healthcare industry listened to the webinar live. It is available OnDemand here https://www.dnvgl.us/assurance/webinars/HC/index.html and provides a companion white paper for download, outlining how ISO 9001 can improve the quality of care at hospitals.

As the nation's second-largest accreditation body, DNV GL Healthcare cites its "kinder and gentler" approach and its year-round partnership strategy as some of the keys to successfully accrediting hospitals and boosting quality improvement at a rate of 20% growth year over year. The majority of hospitals choose accreditation in order to be certified by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to receive federal funds and reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Hundreds of hospitals across the United States have switched to DNV GL Healthcare over the past decade. The organization accredits nearly 500 hospitals in 49 states.
