Relay Teams Up with Durham Bulls Fans in Attempt to Break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Wearing Sweatbands

RALEIGH, N.C., July 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- North Carolina-based Relay, the ultimate screen-free smartphone alternative for kids, today announced it will team up with Durham Bulls baseball fans in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record(TM) for the largest gathering of people wearing sweatbands. The feat, sponsored by the new product from Republic Wireless, will take place during "Stranger Things Night" at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Friday, July 13th at 7:05 PM EDT.

"We developed our screen-free device to support parents seeking more screen-time balance with their kids. What better way to introduce our walkie-talkie influenced Relay than at an event that celebrates outdoor play and the carefree spirit of the '80s," said Chris Chuang, CEO of Republic Wireless. "Millions of people have grown nostalgic watching Stranger Things, which depicts the childhood they remember where kids took off on bikes armed only with walkie talkies to enable their adventures."

The current World Record was set in Louisville, Kentucky in 2014 with 4,673 people sporting the retro accessories. Durham Bulls Athletic Park's sizable capacity puts this attempt on track to beat that number. Durham Bull players will be wearing specially designed uniforms inspired by "Stranger Things" character Dustin Henderson, complete with his signature backpack and trucker hat. Attendees are encouraged to pull out their favorite 80's garb - like sweatbands - and other retro-inspired fashions.

"We are anticipating another great evening of entertainment here at the DBAP on Friday. This world record attempt will be a great addition to the night and we are excited to be the venue for it. We're thrilled to have partnered with a company that's finding ways for families to stay connected while being more active," said Durham Bulls Director of Corporate Partnerships Nick Bavin.

Common Sense Media

To further amplify the product's mission of digital well-being among children, Relay is proud to announce that $5 from each of the next 5,000 Relays sold will go to support Common Sense Education, the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students harness technology for learning and life by providing teachers and schools with free research-based classroom tools.

"We are grateful for Republic Wireless's support of Common Sense Education and our efforts to equip every student in this country with the digital citizenship skills they need to thrive in the digital age," said Jill Murphy, Vice President & Editor-in-Chief of Common Sense Media. "We're also really excited to be part of this fun campaign from Republic Wireless that emphasizes the importance of a healthy balance between tech time and real time."
