Website pop-ups are a very interesting and contentious topic. Some people loathe pop-ups with a fervor that is often reserves for political or religious debates while other people find them helpful. Often the reason for differing opinions has more to do with how these elements are deployed by web designers rather than the elements themselves. In some cases, it seems that people just aren't aware of the rules that should be followed when you choose to use them because they are a very versatile element that can increase conversions. Today New York web design company, Lounge Lizard, discusses the Website Pop-Up Rules everyone should follow.

    1. Always have a purpose. Pop-ups should only be used because they add value
to the customer journey. They should never be used just because it is a
trendy choice, or the designer thinks they look cool.
    2. Proper format. Any pop-ups should follow the format of your existing site
       for color, font, etc.
    3. Always responsive. This is a must in a responsive design and in general
every design should be responsive these days.
    4. Sweet and simple. Pop-ups should always be short and focused on a
singular point. If it is a CTA, then the only option should be YES to opt
in because they can pick No by Xing out the pop-up. If you are collecting
customer information, then only ask for their e-mail address.
    5. Relevant. A pop-up should be relevant to the page it pops-up on.
    6. Not on the landing page. For the most part pop-ups should not be used on
the landing page unless you have very limited pages. You don't need to
whack someone with a sign the instant they knock on the door.
    7. Focus on timing. Pop-ups are an element that relies on timing for maximum
effectiveness. For example, when someone has been idle on a page for a
few minutes a "Do you need help?" pop-up would be appropriate. Or when
someone is about to exit your site a pop-up "offering assistance" would
       be in order.
    8. Use frequency rules. Frequency rules can be set-up to ensure that
visitors don't see certain pop-ups on every page or on every visit. This
is important, so you do not annoy visitors with your "Privacy Policy
Change" pop-up after they have already acknowledged it.
    9. Location, location, location. Pop-ups should appear in the proper place
depending on what they are trying to accomplish. For example, a help
pop-up might appear in the lower corner while a pop-up for someone
leaving the site should be dead center. A "special offer" could be a
sticky bar on the lower part of the page.
    10. Easy escape. There should always be an obvious, effortless way to get
out of a pop-up. A large "X" to the top-right is the most common method.
People get very frustrated when they can't remove a pop-up quickly.
    11. Do as Google says. Google has specific rules for pop-ups on mobile.
Follow them or risk Google's wrath.
    12. Customize when possible. If you are using audience segmentation and
targeting, then you can aim for customized pop-up messages which will
        increase their effectiveness.
