World MRSA Day Fights for Global Action and Awareness

CHICAGO, July 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The ongoing global MRSA epidemic, which is causing human suffering and loss of life continues to escalate. The majority of healthcare facilities in the United States are ignoring their lapses in infection control. Handy hygiene compliance with healthcare workers continues to be low, many hospitals are still not screening enough patients for MRSA, decontaminating of the healthcare facility is minimal and antibiotics are still overprescribed. A culture of complacency prevails in the U.S. healthcare community and Infections are the leading medical error in U.S. healthcare facilities and underreported - MRSA has spread from healthcare facilities to the community.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a current and dangerous global public health crisis. "The ongoing MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphyloccocus aureus) epidemic is fueling antibiotic resistance globally and MRSA infections are rampant in U.S. healthcare facilities ", states Jeanine Thomas founder of MRSA Survivors Network. The ill-advised universal decolonization approach (every patient given mupiricin and bathed with chlorhexidine) will create more antimicrobial resistance, change a patient's microbiome and not recommended by leading infectious disease experts globally. The Veterans Health Administration have been screening their patients for MRSA since 2007 in all of their 150 facilities and reduced MRSA infections by over 80%. https://apic.org/For-Media/News-Releases/Article?id=30892397-0c91-4dec-a4ca-8ea55c77846e
