The Phoenix Opens First Boston Free Sober Active Community
BOSTON, Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Phoenix, an innovative and free sober active community, this weekend opened its flagship 11,000 sq. ft. Boston multi-purpose fitness facility at 54 Newmarket Square. The nonprofit organization, which has inspired more than 26,000 people across America, is redefining the recovery process through a unique model that helps people recover from substance use disorders and heal from related adverse experiences by leveraging the transformative power of social connection and physical activity.
First launched in Colorado in 2006 by Scott Strode, the program has offered hope to those in recovery with a philosophy of "Rise, Recover, Live" centered on the role of community in providing individuals pursuing a sober life with long-term support, strength and a new identity. By actively removing all stigmas and barriers to participate - including financial - The Phoenix provides critical emotional and physical support, with the goal of helping as many people as possible find a clear path to recovery.
Memberships are free for those seeking recovery, and include daily classes ranging from CrossFit and climbing, to hiking, running, cycling, and yoga. The only requirement to attend is achieving at least 48 hours of continuous sobriety. Every discipline offered is scalable to accommodate beginner to expert levels, and each workout helps individuals become less defined by their substance use disorder and identify more as runners, yogis, climbers, boxers, and contributing members of society.
"There is a lot of conversation about how hard Boston and New England have been hit by the opioid crisis, so we selected it for a new flagship location to change that narrative and start making it one of the best places to be in recovery," said Strode, the Founder and National Executive Director of The Phoenix. "The city has played a significant role in my recovery path since I found sobriety here 21 years ago, and now my goal is to bring hope to those who need it most. Together with our dedicated staff, we are excited to share The Phoenix message and build a positive new community."
The Phoenix comes to Boston at a critical time in the fight against addiction and much needed options for recovery. In Massachusetts alone, there were 657 confirmed opioid?related overdose deaths in the first half of 2018, which is only a small part of the destructive impact. While this is a daunting statistic, the message at The Phoenix is one of hope and perseverance. The Phoenix assesses its impact and outcomes by administering a three and a six-month evaluation survey to members. Results show that more than 80% of members make significant improvements after just three months of participation and that after six months, 86% of active members remain sober. Two-thirds of those who relapse report that The Phoenix helped them return to sobriety. The Phoenix intends to expand throughout New England, with Lowell being the next location opening in October.
