Parkinson Voice Project Mourns Passing of Dr. Daniel Boone

RICHARDSON, Texas, Oct. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- "It is with deep sadness that our family at Parkinson Voice Project mourns the passing of Daniel R. Boone, PhD, CCC-SLP, of Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Boone passed away at Methodist Richardson Medical Center in the early morning on Saturday, October 27, 2018. He had traveled to Richardson to present at Parkinson Voice Project's quarterly SPEAK OUT!(®)( )Workshop, where he would lecture and provide hands-on training to speech-language pathologists who were eager to learn his methods for improving the communication of individuals diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Parkinson Voice Project's speech therapy program is based on the teachings of Dr. Boone, who recognized in the late 1950s that individuals with Parkinson's could improve their communication, if they converted speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. He instructed those with Parkinson's to 'speak with intent'.

Dr. Boone served as president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (1976) and received Honors of the Association (1984). Earlier this year, Parkinson Voice Project launched the National SPEAK OUT!(®) and LOUD Crowd(®) Grant Program Honoring Daniel R. Boone, PhD, CCC-SLP. More than $650,000 in grant money has been awarded to speech therapy clinics across the country. Thousands of individuals with Parkinson's are not only learning how to 'speak with intent', but they are applying Boone's principles to all their daily activities and 'living with intent'. Parkinson Voice Project plans to award more grants to speech therapy clinics this coming year in Dr. Boone's memory.

Dr. Boone is described by his colleagues as a true giant in the field of communication sciences and disorders--a researcher, clinician, and mentor in the area of voice disorders, going back to the first edition (published 1971) of his classic textbook, The Voice and Voice Therapy - soon to be released in its 10(th )edition. A world-renowned expert, Dr. Boone authored 17 professional books, several book chapters and monographs, and over 100 refereed journal publications. His most recent book, Trouble Talking, was released this past summer.

The attached video includes some of Dr. Boone's heartfelt stories and clinical views on the treatment of Parkinson's and the profession of communication sciences and disorders, as well as photographs from his time spent at Parkinson Voice Project.

Parkinson Voice Project is grateful for Dr. Boone's love and mentorship in serving the global Parkinson's community. He leaves behind a profound legacy and will be missed dearly."
