The water-based adhesive market size is projected to grow from USD 15.3 billion in 2018 to USD 20.2 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 5.7%.

Water-based adhesives are manufactured by the emulsification and polymerization of resins, such as polyvinyl acetate (PVA), vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE), and acrylic polymer emulsion, in water. They are generally free from solvents and hence, are non-toxic and non-flammable. They are mainly used to join porous materials, such as paper, cloth, and wood. These adhesives are environmentally-friendly, which are relatively lower-priced than the other conventional adhesives.

Water-based adhesives are widely used in applications such as tapes & labels, paper & packaging, building & construction, woodworking, and automotive & transportation. The water-based adhesive market has witnessed a high growth due to the demand from the paper & packaging and automotive & transportation applications. Acrylic polymer emulsion, PVA, VAE, Styrene Butadiene (SB) Latex, and PUD are the major resin types of water-based adhesives in the market.

APAC accounts for a major share of the market and is also projected to register the highest CAGR due to rising awareness regarding environmentally-friendly adhesives and growing demand from the automotive and construction industries.

Acrylic polymer emulsion adhesive is the most preferred type of adhesive, which is also expected to grow at the highest growth rate. PUD is also gaining market share with the demand growing higher than those of most adhesive types. These are comparatively more expensive than other water-based adhesives and, hence, the higher price is sometimes a hindrance for the growth of the PUD water-based adhesives.

The major challenge in the water-based adhesive market is the competition from solventless and hot-melt adhesives. The solventless and hot-melt adhesives offer low VOC emissions, have a wide range of applications, and offer better results in joining materials. These adhesives are generally priced higher than water-based adhesives. Various end-users mostly focus on performance over price where durability and quality are required.

Water-based adhesives have several untapped opportunities in the automotive & construction applications. Continuous research & development (R&D) in the enhancement of the mechanical and chemical properties of water-based adhesives can open up a myriad of new applications. For instance, with improved heat resistance properties, they can have many more applications in automotive and packaging. They can also be used in more construction-related applications requiring high bond strength.
