Coming to the 2019 iaedp(TM) Symposium: Managing Challenges of Eating Disorders Among Active Duty Military Personnel

PEKIN, Ill., Dec. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The United States has one of the best militaries in the world with just over 1.34 million active-duty troops. They are prepared to meet any threat or challenge facing the country. However, many Americans are unaware of the personal and mental health challenges facing members of the nation's armed forces. One of these challenges is the prevention and treatment of eating disorders among the ranks of U.S. military service personnel.

Eating disorders occur at a higher rate in the military than the general population, and many more are undiagnosed due to subthreshold diagnostic criteria. Combat deployments and the experience of military sexual trauma often leave service members more vulnerable to developing eating disorders due to shared etiologic mechanisms with posttraumatic stress disorder. Service members may present as difficult to treat due to multiple factors including the stigma of mental illness in the military.

At the 2019 iaedp(TM) Symposium, the presentation "Military Service and Eating Disorders: What We Know and What We Can Do" will explore the frequency of eating disorders in the military, how military service impacts development of eating disorders and the relationship of military traumas and eating disorders. Those attending the presentation by Kristen Buss, LPC, NCC will be able to identify unique service-related risk factors to the development of eating disorders, describe the relationship of military-related traumas and eating disorders and identify resources specifically for service members.

The Buss presentation will take place on opening day during the 2019 iaedp(TM) Symposium, slated for February 7 - 10 in Palm Desert, CA at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort. More than 60 presentations and workshops will be held over four days, featuring the latest research by world- renowned eating disorders treatment professionals.
Kristen Buss, LPC, NCC a BA in psychology from Hastings College and a MEd in professional school counseling at University of North Carolina. Buss has been a therapist for six years with experience in private practice and in a hospital system.
