Education Leaders Highlight Use of Digital Curriculum to Unlock Success for Struggling Students

SEATTLE, Jan. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Apex Learning, a recognized pioneer and innovator in online learning for secondary education, partnered with education leaders to facilitate panel discussions on meeting the needs of struggling students at the 2018 iNACOL Symposium.

"We were honored to work together with leading districts to highlight results from their programs that use digital curriculum to support diverse student populations," said Cheryl Vedoe, CEO, Apex Learning. "When districts are able to do more to support struggling students--from those with learning gaps to below proficient readers and English language learners--the result is more students at grade level, more students passing high stakes exams and more students graduating on time."

In a panel on meeting the needs of ELL students, three districts shared legislation and policy changes to support ELL students and best practices for implementing and evaluating effective resources to drive achievement for this growing population of students. ELL students represent the fastest growing student population in the U.S. Nearly three out of four classrooms have at least one ELL student and just one-third of ELL students reach basic proficiency on national exams in math and reading while the dropout rate for ELL students is double the national average.

A second panel on equity of opportunity addressed initiatives to improve systemic culture, conditions and competencies to raise achievement for all students. Three districts articulated how they are creating pathways for success to engage, encourage, and empower young people, regardless of gender identity, race, class, or nationality.

"Collaborating with district equity leaders to understand how we can better support equal learning opportunities for all students is unequivocally important," said Diana Marshall, Director, Equity and Student Achievement, San Juan Unified School District. "Digital curriculum is a key component of our strategy to personalize the learning needs of all students, particularly those who may be struggling."
