Mount Sinai Hosts Annual Live Surgery Training for Gender Affirmation Procedures
NEW YORK, Feb. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mount Sinai Health System will host its second annual live surgery training to educate health care professionals about gender affirmation procedures. The comprehensive three-day conference will occur from Thursday, February 28, to Saturday, March 2, at Stern Auditorium on The Mount Sinai Hospital campus. The groundbreaking conference is presented by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and their partners, the American Society of Gender Surgeons.
Five live surgeries will be featured, including metoidioplasty (female-to-male surgery), laryngeal surgeries for voice feminization, vaginoplasty, facial feminization, and chest surgery. The global education initiative conference will incorporate moderated video sessions, expert panel discussions, and didactic sessions analyzing hormone therapy, fertility preservation and hysterectomy, transfeminine procedures, transmasculine procedures, and sexual functioning after gender-affirming surgery. Thursday's session is the didactic portion of the conference and is available as a one-day offering to health care providers.
More than 200 world-renowned surgeons, surgical residents, surgical fellows, and peri- and postoperative providers who specialize in urology, plastic surgery, and gynecology are expected to attend. The conference provides the opportunity for health care professionals from fields ranging from behavioral health to endocrinology to collaborate on improving the quality of care offered to transgender patients.
The conference's co-directors include esteemed gender surgeons Jess Ting, MD, Director of Surgery at Mount Sinai's Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS), and Loren S. Schechter, MD, Medical Director, Weiss Memorial Hospital, Chicago.
WPATH and the American Society of Gender Surgeons instituted the conference to address large disparities in access to health care for transgender patients.

Transgender affirmation surgeries increased 155 percent from 2016 to 2017, and Mount Sinai has been at the forefront of transgender patient care. Since debuting in 2016, surgeons at CTMS have performed more than 800 transgender affirmation surgeries.
