PhotoOpTx Announces Agreement with Jaeb Center for Health Research on Behalf of the DRCR Network

SOLON, Ohio, March 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PhotoOpTx, LLC has entered into an agreement with the Jaeb Center for Health Research Foundation Inc. (JCHR), acting on the behalf of the DRCR Network, to provide devices for "A Pilot Study Evaluating Photobiomodulation Therapy for Diabetic Macular Edema." The study, which is expected to begin in March 2019, will include both active and sham treatments for an estimated 134 participants. The DRCR Network protocol is referenced as "Protocol AE".

In the United States, an estimated 30.2 million adults have diabetes mellitus. Nearly 8 million people age 40 or older in the U.S. are estimated to have diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetic macular edema (DME), a consequence of retinopathy, is the most common condition that contributes to vision loss in persons with diabetes. Nearly half of all people with DR will develop DME.

The DRCR Network was formed in September 2002 and currently includes over 115 participating sites (offices) with over 400 physicians throughout the United States. It is funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). The NEI is part of the National Institutes of Health, which is the federal government agency that funds medical research.

The core centers within the DRCR Network that support overall operation and leadership of the network include: the office of the Network Chairs (Jennifer K. Sun, M.D., M.P.H., Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts and Daniel F. Martin, M.D., Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio) and the Coordinating Center (Director Adam R. Glassman, M.S. and Executive Director Roy W. Beck, M.D., Ph.D., Jaeb Center for Health Research, Tampa, FL)

"The Network is enthusiastic about evaluating the novel, non-invasive approach of photobiomodulation therapy for diabetic macular edema," said Dr. Jennifer Sun, Chair of Diabetes Initiatives for the DRCR Network. "We are honored and pleased to be able to be a research partner with the Jaeb Center and the DRCR Network," said Thomas Kelly, CEO of PhotoOpTx. "Their combined record of achievement in finding solutions for eye disease speaks for itself."
