National Eating Disorder Program Hires Vice President of Movement, Research and Outcomes

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., June 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Brian Cook, Ph.D. joins Alsana, a nation-leading eating disorder treatment program, as the vice president of movement, research and outcomes. Cook will be leading the movement program of Alsana's Adaptive Care ModelTM--the only integrated and evidence-based approach to eating disorder recovery in the industry.

This innovative approach focuses on the five dimensions of health: therapeutic, nutritional, medical, movement and relational. This adaptive model changes the functional relationship of exercise from a compensatory behavior to one that functions equally with other components of complete health. The evidence-based movement program combines exercise, psycho-education, and low-intensity experiential activities--such as kayaking to the other side of the lake as a team--to help transform physical movement into a pleasurable tool for sustained recovery.

"Brian was an active participant in the creation of the movement dimension of the Adaptive Care Model and will continue to elevate and provide new evidence-based research for the industry," said Jennifer Crute Steiner, CEO of Alsana. "His passion for improving the lives of individuals by finding their daily functionality will be a huge benefit to our clients."

Cook will be the senior leader of Alsana's movement/exercise program and research/outcomes for the company. He will be working in partnership with operational leaders to develop, implement and support clinical quality of the movement dimension across Alsana's 13 programs nationwide. Cook is responsible for training staff on exercise and eating disorders and on executing the movement program.

In addition, he will coordinate all research projects and establish partnerships with academic institutions to conduct research in the field of eating disorders. Cook serves as the industry voice for movement and exercise for Alsana, presenting at conferences and other national venues.

"Working at Alsana, I'll be able to continue my research and implement the movement dimension of the Adaptive Care Model. Together, we'll be able to bring to light that movement in eating disorder recovery as a vital part to the healing process," said Cook.

Cook has developed and maintained an original line of research focused on examining the etiological role, management, and therapeutic potential of exercise in eating disorders. He received his education at the University of Rhode Island, University of Florida, and a National Institute of Mental Health-funded post-doctoral fellowship at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo, ND--allowing him to train under leading experts in the eating disorder field.

He is a sought-after expert presenting research at international level conferences, chairing conference paper sessions focused on eating disorders, and associated psychiatric illnesses at international level conferences, publishing in leading journals, and authoring several invited book chapters.
