ESG, a Leading Edge Non-Surgical Weight Loss Procedure, Now Available From West Medical

LOS ANGELES, July 12, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Southern California healthcare group West Medical has announced that it now offers endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) for significantly overweight patients, particularly those who may not meet the standard criteria for bariatric surgery. The procedure differs from other weight loss procedures in that it is able to reduce the available area of the stomach - and thereby reduce the appetite - without any incisions. West Medical adds that it has only been performing the procedure for a short period of time, but patients are already experiencing notable benefits.

ESG, often referred to as an accordion procedure, employs a device similar to those used to in endoscopies. As with a standard endoscope, an extremely thin, flexible mechanism enters through the mouth and down towards the bottom of the stomach. At that point, however, the device sutures the bottom half of the stomach to the top half, non-surgically reducing its capacity by roughly 50 percent. West Medical says that the operation is usually most attractive for people who have significant weight issues but who may not fit the criteria for a gastric sleeve or bypass. Bariatric surgery patients typically must have a body mass index of either 40 and above, or 35 and above with at least one significant weight-related health problem. The clinic notes that patients with BMIs over 30 but who are otherwise healthy may prefer to stay ahead of such issues as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, rather than waiting for them to arise.

The clinic adds that, just as with other weight loss procedures, ESG patients will have to be ready to make major lifestyle changes if they are going to achieve a significant and permanent weight loss. However, since no incisions are made, accordion procedures involve significantly less downtime than weight loss surgeries. If weight remains a serious health problem after an ESG, bariatric surgeries may be available in some cases, says West Medical.
