SAE International and ATA's Technology & Maintenance Council Expand the Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship

WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- SAE International and the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) of American Trucking Associations announced the expansion of the TMC/SAE Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship to now recognize two outstanding students, beginning with the 2019/20 Academic Year. The scholarship supports the organizations' ongoing commitment to advancing student development by encouraging technical competence and understanding to help drive practical solutions for equipment problems and vehicle design.

Established in 1992, this technical education scholarship honors the leadership of Donald D. Dawson. In his position as vice president of maintenance with Roadway Express, Mr. Dawson worked through SAE and TMC to merge the goals of truck equipment users and manufacturers. As a dedicated, lifelong student of his profession and technology, Mr. Dawson encouraged professional development for all levels of professional and student engineers.

The 2019 TMC/SAE Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship was awarded to two worthy recipients.

    --  Yan Hao Wong of Houston, Texas, is an incoming sophomore studying
        Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.
        Yan Hao will focus his studies on autonomous driving development, which
        will include coursework in Automatic Controls, Algorithms and Machine
        Learning.
    --  Robert van Zyl of Peachtree City, Ga., will major in Mechanical
        Engineering as he begins his freshman year at the Georgia Institute of
        Technology. As Robert embarks on his college career, he brings an
        exceptional talent for developing engineering solutions to complex,
        real-world problems.

Applications for the 2020/2021 TMC/SAE Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship begin on January 6, 2020. Interested students must:

    --  Have hands-on automotive experience in areas such as rebuilding engines,
        working on cars or trucks, tractor repair or working with drones (UAV
        Challenge, for example), robotics (FIRST, VEX) and coding.
    --  Have a 3.75 GPA or higher and rank in the 90th percentile in both
        Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections of the SAT or ACT.
    --  Be an incoming freshman pursuing an engineering or related science
        degree through an ABET-accredited program.

SAE International's robust scholarship program includes 17 scholarships which awarded more than $100,000 to 35 students in 2019. Applications for the TMC/SAE Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship for the 2020/21 academic year will be accepted beginning January 6, 2020.
