Disney + Released - Digiarty Unveils Insights on 2019 DVD vs Streaming Landscape

CHENGDU, China, Nov. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- "Disney+" was released on November 12 in the US, and will launch a week later in Australia and New Zealand and on March 31 next year across Western Europe. The $6.99-a-month/$69.99-a-year Disney Plus streaming service will be the exclusive destination to stream kid's animations, TV series, original franchises, and mega-blockbusters from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel. With new streaming services from Disney, Apple, and WarnerMedia join the fray to compete with existing major players like HBO and Netflix, people can't help but asking: "is physical media dead?"

With the streaming service landscape growing, it looks like the DVD is on its last legs. For years, global spending on DVDs and Blu-rays declined by year. According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), global sales on disc video formats were $25.2 billion in 2014 but dropped by 50% with total sales hitting $13.1 billion only in 2018. Meanwhile, the global number of subscriptions to online streaming services had ballooned to $613.3 million the same year.

Will Disney + put another nail in the coffin for DVD and Blu-ray market?

No, at least not in the near future. Digiarty today unveils the DVD purchase statistics from its recent user survey. According to Digiarty, the demand for disc-based media is still high because of the following benefits of DVD vs streaming:

-- A majority (43%) of respondents want the true ownership of a movie,
without being at the mercy of the internet and streaming services.
-- One-third (29%) of movie buffs like the extras, behind-the-scenes
content, and other elements that are not available on streaming
        services.
-- Parent respondents (15%) need the movies to be ready for playback
whenever their toddlers and young kids want to watch.
-- 12% of customers can always find a movie on DVD, instead of being
limited by a content library of certain services.

All of that said, physical entertainment looks a little peaked in the home-video industry. And now major hardware manufacturers started to hasten its decline: Microsoft launched the disc-less version of the Xbox One S in the summer and Samsung announced the discontinuation earlier this year. While streamers say Hurrah! to Disney Plus, DVD collectors are trying to keep their library forever. "As we are on the cusp of an all-digital era, get prepared is what we should do now." said Jack Han, CEO of Digiarty Software, "It's time to turn DVD collections into digital formats to bring favorite movies with us into the future."
