The Virtual High School Students Outperform National Averages for Advanced Placement® Pass Rates

BOSTON, Dec. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In addition to continuing their more-than-a-decade-long streak of surpassing national AP® average pass rates, students from The Virtual High School (VHS Inc.) have now significantly exceeded previous pass rates on many high-performing Advanced Placement® VHS classes.

On AP® English Literature and Composition, 93% of VHS students who took the 2019 exam scored a 3 or higher, almost double the 50% national average. In addition, the students outperformed the 2018 VHS cohort of exam takers, 72% of whom scored a 3 or higher, by 21 percentage points. The 2018 exam takers still notably outpaced that year's national pass rate average of 47% on the exam, by 25 percentage points.

On AP® European History, 83% of VHS students who took the 2019 exam scored a 3 or higher, surpassing the 58% national average. Additionally, the 2019 group beat the preceding VHS cohort, 69% of whom passed the 2018 exam, by 14 percentage points. The 2018 exam takers beat the national average of 57.7% by approximately 11 percentage points.

On AP® Physics C Mechanics, 88% of VHS students who took the 2019 exam scored a 3 or higher, beating the 71% national average. In 2018, a slightly smaller percentage (81%) of the exam-taking cohort scored a 3 or higher. The 2018 cohort surpassed that year's national average of 77.2%.

"It's delightful to see our students exceed not only national AP® averages, but also our past year's achievements," said Carol Ribeiro, President & CEO of VHS. "It's a validation that our pedagogical approach really works for students, and a reflection of the experience and dedication of our highly-qualified teachers. We applaud both our students and teachers for their hard work and success."

VHS online AP® courses help supplement core curriculum at local schools, and give students the opportunity to explore their interests. Course choices range from popular subjects such as Biology, Psychology, and English Literature and Composition to less conventional options including Music Theory, Art History, Computer Science Principles, Human Geography, and more. In all, VHS offers 23 Advanced Placement® courses online preparing students for 26 AP® exams and giving them the opportunity to earn college credit in high school.
