The RSV Nuyina comes to life
February 5, 2020 - Our customer, the Australian Antarctic Division, celebrates a major milestone in the construction of RSV Nuyina, designed, engineered and built by Damen. The propulsion system of the world’s largest research vessel with ice-breaking capabilities, has been started for the first time at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. This is once again a demonstration of the significant potential made possible by the long term cooperation between the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Dutch maritime cluster in terms of innovation and export potential.
The Nuyina, whose name means Southern Lights in the palawa kani language of the Tasmanian Aborigines, is the largest ship on Damen’s order book at the moment. She must be able to perform various tasks in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean including ice-breaking operations in sea ice of up to 1.65 metre thickness, extensive logistical work for the delivery of personnel, cargo, liquids and equipment from the Port of Hobart and also facilitate scientific research focused on global warming and protection of the (sub)-Antarctic eco-systems. That is why the Nuyina again meets many military and high-quality requirements that make her a very complex and unique ship.
More than 80 Dutch maritime suppliers, among which are Alewijnse Marine Systems, Alphatron Marine, Bakker Sliedrecht, Heinen & Hopman Engineering, Pon Power, Radio Holland, have brought in their expertise and dedication to make Nuyina happen.
